The reverse of\r\nthe painting bears the inscription ‘Don Michael de Castro’,\r\nidentifying the sitter.\r\nIn 1640, an international dispute arose in the former\r\nKingdom of Kongo between the lord of the province of\r\nSoyo and the king of Kongo. Dom Miguel de Castro was an\r\nambassador dispatched by the lord of Soyo on a diplomatic\r\nmission to secure the support of the Dutch Republic.\r\nConsequently, he bestowed 200 enslaved people upon the\r\ngovernor of Dutch Brazil.
