The portrait is one of a series of three paintings, all of which have a name on the back. The names Diego Bemba and Dom Michael de Castro are written on the back of the other two. Thanks to this information we can reconstruct the history of the paintings. Dom Michael de Castro was on a diplomatic mission for the Count of Sonho (Soyo, in what was the Kongo at the time), Daniel da Silva. He was part of a delegation to meet the head of the Dutch Republic, Governor Frederick Hendrick, and the governor of Dutch Brazil, Johan Mauritz, Count of Nassau-Siegen. The goal was to gather allies in a territorial dispute in the Kongo. He brought his servants Pedro Sunda and Diego Bemba with him.","type":"EXHIBITIONTEXT","source":"Eva de la Fuente Pedersen","date":"2018-06-11T00:00:00.000Z"},{"text":"Unusually, this painting shows its African figure dressed in European clothes, placing him on a par with the European colonial powers. He looks back over his shoulder as if communicating with someone outside the picture. An inscription on the back informs us that this is a portrait of Pedro Sunda, servant of Don Miguel de Castro, envoy in Congo. Portraits of named servants from Africa are rare in art history. Pedro Sunda was part of a delegation that set forth to resolve a territorial dispute in their home country. The delegation initially travelled to Dutch Brazil and then to the Netherlands in search of allies. The precious elephant tusk may have been one of the presents brought by the delegation. Tusks were costly and rare collectibles that any prince would love to display in his cabinet of curiosities.","type":"EXHIBITIONTEXT","source":"Eva de la Fuente Pedersen","date":"2015-01-01T00:00:00.000Z"},{"text":"The African man looks backwards. His attention is directed towards something outside of the picture frame. He almost seems to be trapped between his own cast shadow and a diagonal shadow cast from a high window that we cannot see. The shadows on the wall create an illusion of space and imbue the composition with a strongly dynamic interplay between diagonals. Clear-cut and obvious, the cast shadows add an element of sombreness and drama to the painting An inscription on the back of the painting informs us that we are looking at a portrait of Pedro Sunda, who was a servant of the Congolese envoy Don Miguel de Castro. Portraits of named servants from Africa are rare within art history. Pedro Sunda was part of a delegation that sought for aid in order to resolve territorial unrest in their home country. First the delegation travelled to Dutch Brazil and then to The Netherlands to gather support. The elephant's tusk was among the gifts the delegation brought along.","type":"CATALOGUETEXT","source":"Eva de la Fuente Pedersen"}],"materials":["wood"],"object_names":[{"name":"Painting"}],"production":[{"creator":"Ubekendt","creator_surname":"Ubekendt","creator_date_of_birth":"1600-01-01T00:00:00.000Z","creator_nationality":"Dutch","creator_gender":"UNKNOWN","creator_history":"Samme som KMS7 Ubekendt og KMS9 Ubekendt","creator_lref":"33991_person"},{"creator":"Beckx, Jaspar","creator_forename":"Jaspar","creator_surname":"Beckx","creator_date_of_birth":"1547-01-01T00:00:00.000Z","creator_date_of_death":"1647-01-01T00:00:00.000Z","creator_nationality":"Dutch","creator_gender":"MALE","creator_history":"Virksom ca. 1627-1647","creator_role":"earlier ascribed to","creator_lref":"22277_person"},{"creator":"Eckhout, Albert","creator_forename":"Albert","creator_surname":"Eckhout","creator_date_of_birth":"1610-01-01T00:00:00.000Z","creator_date_of_death":"1665-01-01T00:00:00.000Z","creator_nationality":"Dutch","creator_gender":"MALE","creator_qualifier":"earlier ascribed to","creator_role":"earlier ascribed to","creator_lref":"1651_person"}],"production_date":[{"start":"1641-01-01T00:00:00.000Z","end":"1645-12-31T00:00:00.000Z","period":"1641-1645"}],"techniques":["Oil on panel"],"titles":[{"title":"Pedro Sunda","type":"museum title","language":"engelsk"},{"title":"Pedro Sunda, a Servant of Dom Miguel de Castro","language":"engelsk"}],"number_of_parts":1,"object_number":"KMS8","object_url":"https://api.smk.dk/api/v1/art?object_number=KMS8","frontend_url":"https://open.smk.dk/artwork/image/KMS8","iiif_manifest":"https://api.smk.dk/api/v1/iiif/manifest?id=KMS8","enrichment_url":"https://enrichment.api.smk.dk/api/enrichment/KMS8","similar_images_url":"https://similar.api.smk.dk/similar/?object_number=KMS8","production_dates_notes":["Værkdatering: Ca. 1643","datering: dendrokronologisk, Nationalmuseet 1994.
