Motivet er traditionelt billede på uspoleret lykke i et mytisk og paradisisk Arkadien. Som en af de første i sin generation tog Matisse temaet op igen og brugte det på en ny måde: Ved at udarbejde to versioner af dette motiv i præcis samme format: LE LUXE I (Centre Pompidou, Paris) malet i olie med løse, tørre penselstrøg og LE LUXE II malet i limfarve med store enstonede flader, benyttede han motivet til at afprøve maleriets forskellige udtryks-muligheder.
