Han placerede sig som maler mellem tradition og fornyelse. Den modernistiske tradition fra kunstnere som Karl Isakson og Harald Giersing var bærende for A.s komposition og farveopbygning. Hans kunst hvilede på principperne fra de franske fauvister, der i Danmark var videreudviklet med vægt på farveklangenes og billedplanernes betydning. Som en fornyelse af den farvelyriske holdning kom en dansk hverdagsrealisme, hvor højstemte farver og storladne motiver veg pladsen for dagligdags opstillinger, portrætter og landskaber i et lavmælt farvevalg. En trang til at manifestere denne nye, realistiske holdning fandt hos A. og ligesindede udtryk i etableringen af sammenslutningen Decembristerne, hvor bl.a. Søren Hjorth- Nielsens kunst inspirerede A.
