The art of 18th-century Venice was created in a city that had lost its international political significance, but which still continued its traditions for splendid ceremonies and parties from its past days of glory.\r\n\r\nThe parties included the annual carnival with its costumed crowds and unrestrained behaviour.\r\n\r\nThe theater character Pulcinella\r\nThe Triumph of Pulcinella is a series of paintings originally consisting of four paintings that deal with the carnival and its gallery of musicians, street performers, and quacks. Pulcinella, the original Mr. Punch, is a character from the Italian commedia dell’arte and is easily recognised by his fat, hunchbacked physique, large nose, and conical hat. In Tiepolo’s works he appears in several \"cloned\" versions that take part in mirth-provoking or slapstick scenes. The artist’s fascination with the figure is borne out by the 104 drawings of scenes from the life of Pulcinella that he did under the heading Entertainment for Children.\r\n\r\nPoking fun at the triumphal entries\r\nThe Triumph of Pulcinella pokes fun at triumphal entries familiar from traditional ceremonies where the triumphator is the centre of attention. This ceremony is also familiar from traditional historical painting, but here it has been caricatured with the ample figure of Pulcinella carried by his brother while other characters from commedia dell’arte look on.","type":"OTHERTEXT","source":"THL"},{"text":"Et karnevalsoptog er i fuld gang. Her ses spillemænd, gøglere og maske-klædte kvinder. Here are musicians, artistes, and women in masks. The man in the tall white hat carried forth like a king by the crowds is the figure Pulcinella. He is a familiar character from the Italian commedia dell’arte, the origins of Punch and Judy shows, and can be recognised by his fat, hump-backed body, large nose and distinctive cone-shaped hat. The revellers mock the trium-phant marches of traditional ceremonies led by important persons. Here, the ridiculous Pulcinella has taken over the spot usually reserved for he-roes. In the 18th century Venice had lost its position of international importance, but important traditions from its halcyon days were continued. The man in a red costume and turban testifies to the city’s links to the wider world.","type":"EXHIBITIONTEXT","source":"Eva de la Fuente Pedersen","date":"2011-01-01T00:00:00.000Z"}],"materials":["Lærred"],"object_names":[{"name":"Maleri"}],"production":[{"creator":"Tiepolo, Giovanni Domenico","creator_forename":"Giovanni Domenico","creator_surname":"Tiepolo","creator_date_of_birth":"1727-01-01T00:00:00.000Z","creator_date_of_death":"1804-01-01T00:00:00.000Z","creator_nationality":"Italiensk","creator_gender":"MALE","creator_history":"Tegninger: Tu 10 box Grafik: 140, 143","creator_lref":"1984_person"}],"production_date":[{"start":"1760-01-01T00:00:00.000Z","end":"1770-12-31T00:00:00.000Z","period":"1760-1770"}],"related_objects":[{"notes":"En lignende figur findes gengivet hos P.
