I starten var især vinterbillederne præget af en lidt tung realistisk stil. Omkring 1930 blev koloritten lysere og lettere, og han blev samtidig friere i sine penselsstrøg og lagde større vægt på det flademæssige. Sine motiver fandt G. ofte omkring sit atelier i Lønholt ved Fredensborg. I de tidlige landskaber finder man hyppigt figurer og hunde i forgrunden.
