Han tillhører den generation af malere, der trådte frem omkring 1930 med sociale motiver og bragte en ny vitalitet i det islandske maleri. I sit tidlige maleri var S. under indflydelse af Aksel Jørgensens sociale realisme samt L.A. Rings stilfærdige maleri. Han vakte opsigt med en lavmælt ekspressionisme i malerier af fiskere og bønder, hvis hverdagsliv og drømme blev hans hovedmotiv, hvor dyb værdighed og humanisme blev karakteristisk for tolkningen. Det gjaldt såvel hans realistiske malerier af fiskere som de mere indadvendte og symbolske malerier med scener fra bøndernes liv.
