Orange, rødt og gult løfter sig mod partier af blåt, grønt og sort, og farvekontrasterne får billedet til næsten at gløde. De forskellige penselstrøg forsyner samtidig fladen med en dynamisk, nærmest vibrerende kvalitet. Braque lod sig inspirere af Matisse og Derains fauvistiske udtryk efter at have set deres værker på Salon d’Automne i 1905. Sammen med kunstner¬vennen Othon Friesz udviklede han året efter sin egen version af stilen.
