I samtiden blev Moses set som en ”type” på Jesus, og Mosebøgernes historier som typologier på Det Nye Testamentes historier om Messias. Maleriet sammenfletter to passager i 3. og 4. Mosebog (3:2; 34:3). Gud viser sig for Moses i en tornebusk, der står i flammer og dog ikke fortæres, og befaler ham at føre sit folk ud af Ægypten. Moses’ stav forvandles til en slange, et mirakel, som fik overbevist det jødiske folk om, at de skulle følge Moses. Hele kompositionen tegner sig skarpt mod baggrunden og figurerne har samme ro og tyngde som antikkens klassiske skulpturer. For Poussin gjaldt den klassiske harmoni og ligevægt og den rene linje frem for teatralske lys-skygge effekter.
